Who We Serve

Literacy Council of Seattle serves more than 290 learners each year. Our adult learners are from more than 25 countries - about 30% from China and Taiwan, 30% from Central and South America, 20% from Africa and the Middle East, 10% from other countries and 10% American-born adults.

52% are between 25 and 44 years of age, 80% are female, and 100% are eager to learn English. Some learners who come to LCS speak two or three other languages and have advanced degrees. Others have no reading or writing skills in any language. Most of our clients read in at least one language and have a high school education. Learners are highly motivated to progress in their English skills.

Students are referred to LCS by friends, relatives, libraries, neighbors, co-workers, and state agencies. Many stay 6 months to 1 year until they can manage the language demands of their job and some continue until they can enter a community college or university.
